As a self-employed freelancer writing for magazines and corporate clients, I cobble together a living out of many different pots, but most of my clients are in travel, hospitality, and foodservice. So basically all the industries impacted by mandatory social distancing.

How Covid-19 Impacted a Freelance Writer

Starting in mid-March, both side of my freelance business, corporate and magazine, began to dry up.

I had commissions to complete; I had a trickle of working coming in. But I didn’t know what was next.

Last month brought the biggest highs and lows of the year.

I filed a story that paid a sum of money that made me swoon–and I also filed for unemployment as a precautionary measure.

I know I’ve lost income, even if I’m not yet sure how much. I figured it was worth it to get in line to have my claim processed, figuring it would be rejected or questioned. Self-employed people are always looked at askance by those working salaried positions, and the opportunity to get pandemic unemployment assistance is new and unprecedented.

I had a lot of feelings. There was pride for my story (which is out and great). Pride in reaching an earnings…
