In uncertain times, we need routine more than ever

Overnight, everything’s changed.

This isn’t the first time I’ve felt that way, and it probably won’t be the last.

It’s natural to feel thrown when the world shifts.

Feel those feelings–and yes, it can be uncomfortable. And that’s normal. We humans are engineered to seek pleasure and avoid pain, so paying attention to what hurts, while necessary, is never going to feel good (stuffing down those negative feelings, on the other hand, is what will bite us in the butt sooner or later).

How a routine helps when nothing makes sense

We cannot control the world. We can only control what we do, what we think, and how we act–or react.

Having a routine helps us maintain consistency. During times of crisis, this consistency offers valuable support and reduces decision-making. Consistent routines are what keep you fed and clothed, keep your home tidied, tend to the needs of your children or pets, and provide structure.

Building routines that support optimal well-being can be a bridge through times of suffering, helping us find mental peace. Routines are proven effective at reducing anxiety and managing chronic health conditions, such as…
